Most businesses either convert to QuickBooks from a hand system or from another program. The QuickBooks start date determines what information will be entered from the previous system. To choose a start date that is best for your company, make sure to consider the following questions:. The answers to the above questions will help you determine the most appropriate start date. For example, if your company will be using the payroll feature, you should consider a start date that falls at the end of a calendar quarter.

Likewise, if it is almost the end of the fiscal year, it is usually better to finish the fiscal year using the old system of bookkeeping and begin the new fiscal year with QuickBooks. Although the start date can be changed at a later time, it determines most of the setup process. It is much easier to set a start date from the beginning than to try to change it later. Also, be sure to choose a QuickBooks start date that is the last day prior to the desired starting period.

For example, choose the start date as December 31 rather than January 1. This will enable you to run reports that isolate these balances from any new transactions.

Analyzing and correcting opening balances is therefore easier. If necessary, opening balances can easily be changed, by simply editing the transaction dates in each of the account registers. Okay, first some background. We recently migrated from QBD to QBO. Today I found a bill for an inventory item that had gotten misplaced and never entered, from before the migration date.

When I try to input the bill, I am prevented from saving it with an error message about the bill date being before the tracking start date for the item.

That start date was initialized in QBD long ago and is well before the bill date, but QBO has set it as the date that we migrated. The solution, as shown in many other posts here, is to smply change the start date for the item.

Unfortunately, when I try I get this:. Some other posts suggest going into the Inventory Item account register and modifying it there, and I have:. But despite setting it to a date well before the one of the bill I'm trying to enter I'm still prevented from saving the bill by that error message.

Any idea what's going on here and how to get around it without deleting the item and making it again? This doesn't feel like a one-off situation and that's really frustrating that I'd have to do that every time this issue may crop up in the future.

To get this sorted out, try editing the start date or As of the date of the item so QuickBooks allows you to move the date back when creating the transaction. However, if the prompt persists that you can't adjust the item's starting date because it doesn't have a starting value transaction associated with it, I suggest creating a new inventory item instead. For more details on how to track your inventory, see this article: Set up and track your inventory in QuickBooks Online.

Are you receiving inventory using a PO? even if you didn't do this for the Supplier, do it when attempting to process the correction, this preserves FIFO practices.

Are there any period limits being enforced for the time frame you are allowed to enter transaction? If none of these conditions apply, you should be able to create a proforma PO which fully documents the fix, receive the goods on the original date and the transaction would appear in proper sequence to modify your QOH.

Please be sure that you have not modified the SKU between the time you first ordered and the present. Something that simple can generate an error message. Also, check for inventory adjustment transactions for that SKU. These do not follow FIFO rules, by definition. You may need to remove the adjustments if any.
